The experts jury of the tenth edition of the European Festival Awards has chosen the Galician WOS Festival x SON Estrella Galicia as the best indoor festival in Europe in 2018. WOS competed with nine other finalists, seven of them Germans, one Austrian and one Czech. Since its beginning on only three occasions a Spanish festival has won an award at the gala: Primavera Sound in 2014, and again Primavera Sound and Mad Cool in 2017. This year the only Spaniards who accompanied WOS among the finalists were again these big format Barcelona and Madrid events. The winners were announced last night at a gala in Groningen, in the Netherlands.

Other winners of the contest include the Romanian ARTmania as the best small format festival, the Danish NorthSide as the best medium format festival, the German Wacken Open Air as the best big format festival, the German Rolling Stone Park as the best new festival, the Danish Roskilde as the best lineup, and the DGTL Amsterdam as the most sustainable festival.

WOS’ organizers have underlined since its inception their desire to offer a cultural and artistic alternative event in which to discover and enjoy unique experiences in very special contexts and limited audiences. Their proposal is defined by its willingness to present, within the exceptional framework offered by Santiago de Compostelam artistic forms around electronic music and exploration, all of them supported by the resounding recognition of both public and press. One of its characteristics is precisely its twelve locations, distributed over the urban and historical center of Compostela, which have included in its five years of trajectory the Galician Museum Center for Contemporary Art – CGAC, the City of Culture, the Main Theater, the terrace of a 18th century urban palace, a 18th century church, a Food Market, the headquarters of the SGAE Foundation, three concert halls and an independent cinema hall.

Their program has brought leading artists from as sources as Egypt, Sri Lanka, Japan, Israel, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Germany, Finland, Brazil, the United States, Australia, Canada or Niger. The program, structured around music, has included debate tables, film premieres, club, performance and scenic arts, or gastronomic activities throughout its five editions. In the musical, his lineup has featured cult figures as well as revelation artists, with names like The Soft Moon, Thee Oh Sees, Silver Apples, Beak>, Michael Rother plays Neu !, Spectrum, Laurel Halo, Roly Porter & MFO, Raime, Vessel, Fluzo, Skee Mask, Robert Henke, Group A, Paul Jebanasam & Tarik Barri, Demdike Stare, Niño de Elche, Gábor Lázár, Greg Fox, Ron Morelli, Samuel Kerridge, Abul Mogard, Suso Saiz, JASSS, Oddisee or KXP among others. For its part, the cinema programe has participated in worldwide premieres as Nick Cave’s documentary “One More Time With Feeling”, or premiered in Spain the celebrated “Milford Graves Full Mantis” or “Tony Conrad: Completely In The Present “. Sponsors such as Jägermeister and Red Bull participate in the project by complementing the musical program with unusual and transgressive proposals, aimed at a restless audience that seeks artistic food beyond the massive channels.

The annual appointment of the agency WORK ON SUNDAY will announce its dates of 2019 soon, one more year with SON Estrella Galicia linking its name to the one of the festival like main sponsor.
