LUCY RAILTON / UK
Lucy Railton is a prolific cellist and composer whose name can be found in countless recordings and collaborations with various figures of contemporary music. Her long years of study and dedication have equipped her with techniques and unbeatable skills to test and explore the limits of composition and interpretation with her instrument. “Paradise94” (Modern Love, 2018), her debut album, includes studio, live and archival recordings in a dialectical succession (acoustic vs. electronic, real vs. imaginary, iconic vs. iconoclastic), and wrapped in visceral emotional insight and an extraordinary narrative capacity. Combining filigree and autobiographical collage with cello glissandi, her work sinks and shines in an experimental haze, alternating between acoustic chaos and moments of lucidity. The immediacy of her music, impossible to define or reduce to labels, shakes the listener to the first listening. Railton is also founder and co-director of the London Contemporary Music Festival (LCMF).
