MEETING WITH DREW MCDOWALL
The trajectory of Drew McDowall speaks of attitude, methodology and a unique commitment to experimentation. In the late 1970s, a young Scottish gang member begins his relationship with music by forming The Poems with his wife Rose McDowell. It was followed by Psychic TV, his deep friendship with Genesis P-Orridge, Coil and his recent years in New York. The journalist and writer César Estabiel will talk with McDowall from his beginnings and configuration of his methods to the conceptual and stylistic evolution of Coil or the audiovisual show “Time Machines” with Florence To. To chat with Drew is to talk with an important section of the development of the musical avant-garde in Europe from the assimilation of punk codes.
César Estabiel began writing about music when cybercafes had not yet been invented, and never stopped buying records, not even when he was publishing his own fanzine or when he began writing for national, specialized (Rockdelux, Factory) and generalist media (El País and its supplements). When blogs emerged he co-directed “Música en la Mochila”, which still survives thanks to the effort of his ex-partner. Now, as what he likes most is printed paper, he writes less, although he enjoys it more, while there are still magazines like Karate Press. Currently, he spends the day listening to free jazz, reading cheap black novel, promising that one day he will finish the Vainica Doble book that he has been writting, and gladly answering the call of those events that want to have his presence.
