DREW MCDOWALL & FLORENCE TO

DREW MCDOWALL & FLORENCE TO / UK / USA / GER

Scottish born, Brooklyn based electronic artist Drew McDowall was born and raised in an area just outside of Glasgow during a time when the city was one of the most dangerous places in the world. During the tumultuous 1980’s, McDowall found himself in the ranks of P-Orridge’s Psychic TV collective and collaborating with the arcane occult duo comprised of former Throbbing Gristle creator Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and the enigmatic John Balance who had been creating esoteric and progressive electronic music under the banner of Coil. McDowall saw himself shift from occasional contributor to full-time member, causing an immediate, and apparent impact on the band’s sound, as the releases transformed from their previous avant-pop signature to a more complex and methodic electronic imprint. McDowall was instrumental in the creation of Time Machines, of top the most influential drone works of the last 20 years.

Florence To designs and produces sound and light installations also creating generative motion graphics and light productions with a strong focus on architectural spatial design on site specific projects. Originally specialized in textiles and tailoring, she then merged her skills with digital technologies to develop installations in underground and disused spaces using its defects as an advantage. Working in various disparate architectural environments guided her process further into exploring the effects of cognitive and emotional triggers, and how different sensory arrangements are experienced within space. Currently based in Berlin, the artist uses information in relation to vibrations including psychoacoustics, neuroscience research and understanding of computational methods to visualise the process in her work.

They will both be presenting a re-interpretation of the referential work ‘Time Machines’.
